The first thing you'll spot on arrival in Otaki are the busy
fashion outlet shops. Otaki is a popular destination with
Palmerston North to buy top brand fashion garments
from the factory outlet shops. But, there is more to Otaki
than just shopping and cafés...
When travelling north, turn left at the Otaki roundabout
and a short drive west you'll arrive at the main township.
The Otaki township is a hidden treasure, because it is
where the locals shop and you won't spot so many out-
of-towners. The Otaki township has a real country feel
about it.
Apart from the friendly locals, you'll find a variety of
small shops catering for a mixed urban and rural
population. Edhouse's fashion store is a local icon and
is well worth a visit, even if it's just to walk on the old
squeekly wooden floor.
Otaki township has an historic museum based in the old
BNZ building. Otaki also has the world’s oldest Maori
church, Rangiatea, a powerful reminder of New
Zealand's history. The Rangiatea church was built in
1844, was razed by fire in 1995, before being rebuilt to
the original specifications.
Otaki Beach is a popular summer holiday destination
and was once a busy place to collect toheroa shellfish,
before dwindling numbers led to a ban on their
harvesting. The mouth of the Otaki River is still a
popular fishing spot for netting whitebait during the
whitebaiting season. The Otaki Beach sunsets here
best descibed as 'breath-taking'.
Otaki has an 18-hole golf course, a heated indoor
swimming pool, and the oldest Maori Racing Club in
existence. Rent a car from Rent Me Rentals in Kapiti
Road, Paraparaumu and enjoy your day trip to sunny
Otaki at the northern end of the Kapiti Coast.
