Paekakariki is a short 10 minute journey by rental car
from Coastlands Mall in Paraparaumu. Travel south
along State Highway 1 and turn right just past the
Paekakariki Railway Station.
A short drive west by rental car and you'll reach
Paekakariki Beach. Like other beaches on the Kapiti
Coast, Paekakariki Beach is a long sandy beach with a
unique West Coast feel. Walk along Paekakariki Beach
and you'll come across interesting driftwood in all
shapes and sizes as well as sea-shells of various
colours.
Paekakariki Beach is popular in the summer months
with beach-goers from all over the region. Paekakariki
Beach is more exposed than some others on the Kapiti
Coast and the waves can be spectacular at times with
swells up to 2 metres.
The Paekakariki Surf Club patrol the beach regularly
during summer, and it's advised to swim between the
flags as rips and holes can vary along the length of the
beach.
Surfcasting from the beach can be rewarding as
kahawai and snapper often troll the shallow trench.
Hop in your rental car and head north along the
highway to the Tramway Museum at Queen Elizabeth
Park just 5 minutes from Paekakariki by rental car.
Queen Elizabeth Park is also a popular spot for picnics
and walks through the spectacular sand dune
formations.
Paekakariki is only about 20 minutes drive away from
Porirua City and about 25 minutes from the Hutt City.
When travelling to the Hutt Valley, the Paekakariki Hill
Road is an alternative to State Highway One. It is a
steep climb with spectacular scenic 180 degree views
along the Kapiti Coast.
Visit the railway museum at
Paekakariki Station.
